National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued a notice explaining why the JEE Main exam is conducted in Gujarati language in addition to Hindi and English.
In fact, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had questioned in a tweet on November 06, 2019, why the Combined Examination for admission to IIT is conducted in Hindi, English and only in Gujarati.
To which the NTA has now responded. The NTA says that only the state of Gujarat had requested that the question paper be available in the Gujarat language as well. No other state has contacted us for this.
The agency has issued a notice about this on its website. Accordingly, the JEE (Main) examination was started in 2013 with the concept that engineering candidates will be admitted through JEE Main in all the colleges located in the states.
In 2013 this request was sent to all the states, for which only the state of Gujarat was prepared and along with it a demand that the question paper should be in Hindi and English as well as Gujarati language.
After this, in 2014, Maharashtra also agreed to enroll engineering candidates in colleges through JEE Main and from here it was demanded that the question paper should be in Marathi and Urdu language also.
The notice further states that in 2016, the decision of both states to admit engineering students through JEE (Main) was quashed. After which the translation of the question paper into Marathi and Urdu was stopped but the translation in Gujarati continued on Gujarat’s appeal.
The agency says that no state other than Gujarat has requested the translation of the question paper in any other language.
